(i.e. 1\/60 sec = 0.0166 seconds or 16ms).<\/p>\n<p>So how does this relate to blur?\u00a0 Blur is what you get when your object moves relative to the sensor and in turn moving across 2<em> or more<\/em> pixels during the exposure time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Baseball-pixel-blur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Baseball-pixel-blur.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Baseball-pixel-blur.jpg 417w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Baseball-pixel-blur-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/a>You see this when you take a picture of something moving faster than the exposure time can fully stop the motion.\u00a0 In the image to the left, we have a crisp picture of the batter, but the ball is moving very fast causing it to appear blurry.\u00a0 The exposure in this case was taken at 1\/500 sec (2 ms), but the ball moved many pixels during this exposure.<\/p>\n<p>The faster the shutter speed, the less chance the object moves much relative to where it started.\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">machine vision<\/a>, cameras are fixed so they don&#8217;t move, but what we are worried about is the effect of the object moving during exposure time.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the application, it may or may not be sensitive to blur.\u00a0 For instance, say you have a camera that has a pixel array of 1280 pixels in the<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-976\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/pixel-blur-diagram.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-976 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/pixel-blur-diagram.jpg\" alt=\"pixel blur diagram\" width=\"227\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Array of pixels &#8211; Movement of an object during exposure across pixels = Pixel Blur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>x-axis, and your object on the sensor is 1000 pixels.\u00a0 During the exposure the object moves 1 pixel, it is now moved 1 pixel over to the right. It has moved 1 pixel out of 1000 pixels, This is what we call \u201cpixel blur\u201d. \u00a0However, visibly you cannot notice this.\u00a0 If we have an application in which we\u2019re just viewing a scene and no machine vision algorithms are making decisions on this image, if the object moves a very small fraction of the total object size during exposure, we probably don\u2019t care!.<\/p>\n<p>Now assume you are measuring this object using machine vision algorithms. \u00a0 Movement becomes more significant, because you now have uncertainty of the actual size of the object.\u00a0 However, if your tolerances are within 1\/1000, you are OK.\u00a0 However, if your object was only 100 pixels, and it moved 1 pixel, from a viewing application this might still be fine, but from a measurement application, you are now off by 1%, and that might not be tolerable!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-977 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/calculate-blur.jpg\" alt=\"pixel blur calc\" width=\"291\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/calculate-blur.jpg 291w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/calculate-blur-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In most cases, we want crisp images with no pixel blur.\u00a0 The good part is this is relatively easy to calculate!\u00a0\u00a0 To calculated blur, you need to know the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Camera resolution in pixels (in direction of travel )<\/li>\n<li>Field of View (FOV),<\/li>\n<li>Speed of the object.<\/li>\n<li>Exposure time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then you can calculate how many pixels the object will move during the exposure using the following formula:<\/p>\n<p>B = Vp * Te * Np \/ FOV<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where:<\/strong><br \/>\nB = Blur in pixels<br \/>\nVp = part velocity<br \/>\nFOV = Field of view in the direction of motion<br \/>\nTe = Exposure time in seconds<br \/>\nNp = number of pixels spanning the field of view<\/p>\n<p>In the example above, Vp is 1 cm\/sec, Te is 33ms, Np is 640 pixels and FOV is 10cm then:<\/p>\n<p>B = 1 cm\/sec * .033 sec * 640 pixels \/ 10cm = 2.1 pixels<\/p>\n<p>In most cases, blurring becomes an issue past 1 pixel.\u00a0 In precision measurements, even 1
