Calculating Lens Focal length"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In any industrial imaging application, we have the task of selecting several main components to solve the problem at hand. &nbsp;The first being an industrial camera and second, &nbsp;a lens to&nbsp;acquire&nbsp;the given image. &nbsp;In many cases, our working distance of our lens is constrained and may have to mount the camera closer or further from the object plane. &nbsp;Once set, this defines our working distance (WD) for the lens. &nbsp;In addition, we have a given field of view&nbsp;<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">(basically the dimension across the image)&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">of the desired object. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-O0THFQMBGJw\/Vfcx2DImoBI\/AAAAAAAAOlY\/rlqqWc5OP4g\/s1600\/ruler%2B-%2Bfov.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-O0THFQMBGJw\/Vfcx2DImoBI\/AAAAAAAAOlY\/rlqqWc5OP4g\/s320\/ruler%2B-%2Bfov.JPG\" width=\"320\" height=\"238\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">In order to select the correct focal length lens which is denoted in millimeters (i.e 25mm focal length), we need additional information on the camera sensor. &nbsp;Camera sensors come in various &#8220;Image formats&#8221;. &nbsp;The chart below indicates some common formats which relate to the sensor size. &nbsp;The sensor size can be found on the actual sensor datasheets if not available in a given chart. &nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-64WBTrf70yw\/Vfck0lOU16I\/AAAAAAAAOlI\/p3J4s3aIyHw\/s1600\/image%2Bformat%2Bsizes.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-64WBTrf70yw\/Vfck0lOU16I\/AAAAAAAAOlI\/p3J4s3aIyHw\/s400\/image%2Bformat%2Bsizes.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" border=\"0\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">For this exercise, we want to image an object that is 400mm from the front of the lens to the object and desire a field of view of 90mm. &nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">We have selected a camera with the Sony Pregius CMOS IMX174 sensor. &nbsp;This uses a 1\/1.2&#8243; format which measures 10.67mm x 8mm. &nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><u>We have the following known values at this point:&nbsp;<\/u><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Field of View (FOV) <\/b>&nbsp;= &nbsp;90mm<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Working Distance (WD)<\/b> = 400mm &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>Sensor Size<\/b> = 10.67mm &#8211; We will calculate for a 90mm horizonal FOV, in turn use the horizontal sensor dimension<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>The basic formula on how to calculate the lens focal length is as follows:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><b>FL = (Sensor size * WD) \/ FOV<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Using the values from our application,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">FL = ( 10.67mm * 400mm ) \/ 90mm&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">FL = 47.4mm<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Lenses are only available off the shelf in various focal lengths (i.e 25mm, 35mm, 50mm), so this calculate is theoretical and may need an iteration to adjust working distance.
