{"id":832,"date":"2018-03-22T21:35:05","date_gmt":"2018-03-22T21:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/?p=832"},"modified":"2018-03-26T20:05:56","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T20:05:56","slug":"machine-vision-industrial-camera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/2018\/03\/machine-vision-industrial-camera.html","title":{"rendered":"Which Industrial camera would you use in low light?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/OK-vs-NG.jpg\" alt=\"OK vs NG\" width=\"625\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/OK-vs-NG.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/OK-vs-NG-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a>Our job as imaging specialists is to help our customers make the best decisions on which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/industrialCameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">industrial camera<\/a> and image sensor works best for their application.\u00a0 This is not a trivial task as there are many data points to consider, and in the end, a good image comparison test helps provide the true answer.\u00a0 In this blog post, we conduct another image sensor comparison for <em>low light applications<\/em> testing a long time favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/EV76C661ABT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e2V EV76C661<\/a> Near Infra Red (NIR) sensor to the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX178.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Starvis IMX178<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX174.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Pregius IMX174<\/a> image sensor using<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/families\/IDS-Imaging-cameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong> IDS Imaging cameras.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/industrialCameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Industrial camera<\/a><\/strong><\/span> can be easily selected based on resolution and frame rates, but image sensor performance is more challenging.\u00a0 We can collect data points from the camera <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EMVA1288\">EMVA1288<\/a> test results and spectral response charts, but one can not conclude on what is best for the application based on one data point.\u00a0 In many cases, several data points need to be reviewed to start making an educated decision.<\/p>\n<p>We started this review comparing 3 image sensors to determine which ones would perform best in low light applications.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a chart comparing the e2v EV76C661 NIR, Sony Starvis IMX178 and , Sony Pregius IMX174 image sensors found in the IDS Imaging <span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3240CP-NIR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UI-3240NIR,<\/a> <\/strong><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3880CP-M\/C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UI-3880CP<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3060CP-M\/C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>UI-3060CP<\/strong><\/span><\/a> cameras using EMVA1288 data to start. This provides us with accurate image sensor data to evaluate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-840\" style=\"width: 555px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quantum Efficiency (QE)<\/a><\/strong> curves for the sensors to see the sensor performs over the light spectrum as seen to the left.<em>\u00a0 (As a note, QE is the conversion of photon to an electrical charge (electrons)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For this comparison, our objective is to determine which sensor will perform best in low light applications with broadband light.\u00a0 From table 1, the IMX178 has very low absolute sensitivity (abs sensitivity) with taking ~ 1 photon to help make a adequate charge, however the pixels are small (2.4um), so maybe not gather light as well as larger pixels.\u00a0 It does have the best dark noise characteristics however.\u00a0 In comparison, the e2V sensor has 9.9 photons\u00a0 for abs sensitivity (not as good as 1 photon) and has a larger pixel size (bigger is better to collect light).\u00a0 The IMX174 proves to be interesting as well with the largest pixel of 5.86um and the highest QE @ 533nm.<\/p>\n<p>Using the data from the spectral response curves however, helps give us more insight across the light spectrum.\u00a0 Given we are using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/bytype\/NIR-cameras\">NIR enhanced camera<\/a>, we will have significant more conversion of light to a create a charge on the sensor across most of the light spectrum.\u00a0 In turn, we expect we&#8217;d see brighter images from the e2V NIR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3240CP-NIR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDS UI-3240 NIR<\/a> camera.<\/p>\n<p>As a note, one more data point is to look at the pixel well depth.\u00a0 Smaller pixels will saturate faster making the image brighter, so if other variables were close, this may also be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>As one can see, this is not trivial, but evaluating many of the data points, can give us some clues, but testing is really what it takes!\u00a0 So, lets now compare the images to see how they look.<\/p>\n<p>The following images were taken with the same exposure, lens + f-stop in the identical low light environment.\u00a0 In the 2nd image, the e2v image sensor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3240CP-NIR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDS-UI-3240CP NIR<\/a> provides the brighter image as some of the data points started to indicate.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3060CP-M\/C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDS UI-3060CP-M<\/a> (IMX174) is second best.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_843\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-843\" style=\"width: 1033px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a always add camera gain, but we pay the price of adding noise to the image.\u00a0\u00a0 Depending on the camera image sensor, some have the ability to provide more gain than others.\u00a0 This is another factor to review when considering adding gain.\u00a0 We need to also take into account read noise as this will get amplified with gain. \u00a0 Our next part of our test is to turn up the gain to see how we compare.<\/p>\n<p>The following set of images was taken again with the same lens + f-stop, lighting, but with gain at max for each camera.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_846\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/IDS-Imaging\/UI-3060CP-M\/C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDS-UI-3060CP-M<\/a> has the highest gain available, but still keeps the read noise relatively low with 6 electrons.\u00a0 This in low light WITH gain, gives us a nice image in nearly dark environments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><br \/>\nWe can review the data points until we are blue in the face and they can be very confusing.\u00a0 We can however take in all the data and help make some more educated decisions on which cameras to test.\u00a0 For example in the first test, we had a good idea the NIR sensor would perform well looking a the QE curves along with other data.\u00a0 In our second test, we may have seen the UI-3060CP had 24X gain vs others still with low read noise, giving an indication, we&#8217;d have relatively clean image.<\/p>\n<p>In the end,<span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #003366;\"
