Is it really 4X?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/color-industrial-cameras.gif\" alt=\"color vs monochrome images\" width=\"503\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a>Many clients call us about doing measurements on grey scale data, but want to use a color <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/industrialCameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">machine vision industrial camera <\/a><\/strong><\/span>because they want the operator or client to see a more \u2018realistic\u2019 picture.\u00a0 For instance, if you are looking at PCBs, need to read characters with good precision, but also see the colors on a ribbon cable,\u00a0 you are forced to use a color camera.<\/p>\n<p>In these applications, you could take out a monochrome image from a color sensor for processing, and use the color for cataloging and visualization. \u00a0 But the question is, how much data is lost by using a color camera in mono mode?<\/p>\n<p>First, the user must understand how a color camera works, and how it gets its picture.\u00a0 Non <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/family\/JAI\/Apex-cameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>3-CCD cameras<\/strong><\/a> use a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bayer_filter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bayer filter<\/a>,<\/strong> which is a matrix of red, green, and blue filters over each pixel.\u00a0 For each group of 4 pixels, there are 2 greens, 1 red and 1 blue pixel. <em>(The eye being most sensitive in Green, has more to simulate the response).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Bayer-sensor.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-807 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Bayer-sensor.png\" alt=\"Bayer image sensor\" width=\"250\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To get a color image out, each pixel out is a computation of a weighted sum of its nearest neighbor pixels which is known as Bayer interpolation.\u00a0 The accuracy of the color on these cameras is a result of what the original image was, and how the camera algorithms interpolated the set of red, green and blue values for each pixel.<\/p>\n<p>To get monochrome out, one technique is to have the image broken down into Hue, Saturation, and Intensity, with the intensity taken as the grey scale value.\u00a0 Again, this is mathematical computation. The quality of the output is dependent upon the original image and the algorithms used to compute the output.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-808 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor-150x150.png\" alt=\"Mono image sensor\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Mono-image-sensor.png 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An image such as the above will give an algorithm a hard time as you are flipping between grey scale values of 0 and 255 for each pixel (assuming the check board lines up with each pixel).\u00a0 Since the output of each pixel is based on it\u2019s nearest neighbors, you could be replacing a black pixel with 4 white ones!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/grey-scale-image.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-811 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/grey-scale-image-298x300.gif\" alt=\"Grey scale image\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/grey-scale-image-298x300.gif 298w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/grey-scale-image-150x150.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/grey-scale-image-100x100.gif 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if we had an image with a ramp of pixel values, in other words, each pixel was say 1 value less than the one next to it, the average of the the nearest neighbors would very close to the pixel it was replacing.<\/p>\n<p>What does all this mean in real world applications?\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a look at a 2 images, both from the same brand of camera where one is the using the 5MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Pregius IMX250<\/a> monochrome sensor, the other is using the same sensor, but the color version.\u00a0 The images were taken with the same exposure and identical setup.\u00a0 So how do they compare when we blow them up to the pixel level after we take the monochrome output from the color camera and compare it to the monochrome camera?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_810\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-810\" style=\"width: 515px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Grey-scale-analysis.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-810 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Grey-scale-analysis.png\" alt=\"Grey Scale Analysis\" width=\"515\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Grey-scale-analysis.png 515w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Grey-scale-analysis-300x245.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Left) &#8211; Color Image &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;- (Right) &#8211; Monochrome Image<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In comparing the color image (Left), if you expand the picture, you can see that the middle of the E is wider. The transition is not as close to a step function as you would want it to be. The vertical cross section is about 11 pixels with more black than white.
