How can we use lower cost rolling shutter cameras?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-724 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/camera-rolling-vs-global-300x204.gif\" alt=\"machine vision cameras shutters\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/>We often are asked the question, &#8220;What is the difference between a global and rolling shutter image sensor in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/industrialCameras\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">machine vision cameras? &#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>Although they both take nice pictures, they are very different image sensors with pro&#8217;s and con&#8217;s of each.\u00a0 In the end, rolling shutter image sensors cost less, but are not always recommended for moving objects.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, we will explain the differences between global and rolling shutter sensors used in machine vision cameras.\u00a0 Additionally, we highlight how to use a rolling shutter camera capable of\u00a0 &#8220;Global Reset&#8221;\u00a0 providing low cost solutions for some applications with moving objects.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>First, let\u2019s explain the differences between rolling shutter vs global shutter image sensors in machine vision cameras.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Shutter:\u00a0<\/strong> Image sensors with a global shutter allow all of the pixels to accumulate a charge with the exposure starting and ending at the same time.\u00a0 At the end of the exposure time the charge is read out simultaneously.\u00a0 In turn, the image has no motion blur on moving objects.\u00a0 This is given the exposure is short enough to stop pixel blur which is a topic for another blog.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/global-shutter-image.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-715 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/global-shutter-image.gif\" alt=\"Global shutter image\" width=\"307\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rolling shutter:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Image sensors with a rolling shutter do NOT expose all the pixels at the same time.\u00a0 Alternatively, they expose the pixels by row with each row having a different start and end time frame.\u00a0 The top row of the pixel array is the first to expose, reading out the pixel data followed by the 2nd, 3rd &amp; 4th row and so on.\u00a0 Each of the rows start and end point have a delay as the sensor is fully read out.\u00a0 The result of this on moving objects is a skewed image<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-716 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rolling-shutter-image.gif\" alt=\"Rolling shutter image\" width=\"340\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the Pro&#8217;s and Con&#8217;s of each type of shutter?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Shutter:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Pro:\u00a0 <\/em>Freeze Frame images with no blur on moving objects.<\/p>\n<p><em>Con:<\/em>\u00a0 Global shutter sensors require more complicated circuit architecture, thus limiting the pixel density for a given physical size.\u00a0 In turn, sensors with a global shutter will have a larger image format driving up lens cost.\u00a0 The complicated circuits also drive up the overall camera cost and will be more expensive vs a rolling shutter sensor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rolling Shutter:<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Pro:<\/em>\u00a0 Rolling shutter sensors have a simpler design with smaller pixels, allowing higher resolution in a smaller image format allowing use of lower cost lenses. The simpler pixel design results in lower camera costs!.. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/2017\/04\/dalsa-18mp-nano-c4900-camera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For example, Dalsa&#8217;s 18MP Nano for &lt; $600!<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Con:<\/em>\u00a0 Image distortion occurs due to the row by row integration and offset on moving objects.\u00a0 Smaller pixels <em>may<\/em> also require a higher quality lens which is commonly gauged by the lens Modular Transfer Function (MTF).\u00a0 This is really dependent upon your application and can be discussed with a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/contact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sales engineer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong> In turn, there maybe a small trade off to consider.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a way to use a lower cost rolling shutter camera on moving objects?\u00a0 Absolutely using a Global Reset mode found in various image sensors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using a rolling shutter capable of a &#8220;Global Reset&#8221; such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/AR1820HS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AR1820HS<\/a> found in the <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/Teledyne-Dalsa\/Nano-C4900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">18MP Teledyne Dalsa Nano C4900 camera<\/a><\/span><\/strong> will eliminate the image distortion.<\/p>\n<p>A typical rolling shutter image sensor as described above exposes sensor rows separately with a delay as depicted below.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rolling-shutter-mode.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-720 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rolling-shutter-mode.gif\" alt=\"rolling shutter mode\" width=\"673\" height=\"474\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using a rolling shutter with global reset mode, all rows start integrating at the same time as shown below eliminating the image distortion.\u00a0 It is highly recommended however to use a dedicated strobe and sync with the start of image acquisition.\u00a0 A gradient in the image brightness from top to bottom maybe seen if not with some pixel blur due to longer row exposure<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rolling-shutter-with-global-reset-mode.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rolling-shutter-with-global-reset-mode.gif\" alt=\"rolling shutter with global reset mode\" width=\"669\" height=\"476\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A great camera to consider is the<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/models\/Teledyne-Dalsa\/Nano-C4900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 18MP Teledyne Dalsa Nano C4900 camera.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span>This camera features the ON-SEMI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/AR1820HS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AR1820HS<\/a> sensor with this capability.\u00a0 With a price point of &lt;
