These camera sensors have excellent sensitivity, signal to noise ratios and dynamic range.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>Sony has added the new 5MP, 2\/3\u2033 <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\">IMX250<\/a> image sensors to the portfolio which has proliferated into many industrial camera designs. Sensitivity on this camera sensor has even surpassed the popular Pregius 5.86um pixel formats by 1.1X with a smaller pixel allowing the format to be reduced to a 2\/3\u2033 format.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">Compared to the 5MP, 2\/3\u2033 Sony <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/ICX625.pdf\">ICX625<\/a> CCD image sensor, the new Pregius <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\">IMX250<\/a>, 5MP image sensor boasts ~ 5X sensitivity improvement and dynamic range of 71 db vs 56 db and incredibly low dark noise.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span>We know this information can be baffling so we we have put the two sensors in the ring to battle out the specifications!<\/p>\n<p>From the specification standpoint, the <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\">IMX250<\/a> knocks out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/ICX625.pdf\">ICX625<\/a> in a few rounds. Saturation Capacity and Dynamic Range<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Saturation capacity (aka well depth) is the amount of charge in electrons a pixel can hold, whereas dynamic range relates to the signal to noise of the temporal dark noise. \u00a0Comparing saturation capacity and dynamic range, the <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMX250<\/a> knocks out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/ICX625.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICX625<\/a> in one punch.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">\u00a0Although the pixel sizes are the same, the new CMOS pixel wells have a saturation capacity of ~ 10.3K electrons compared to 5.9K for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/ICX625.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICX625<\/a>. \u00a0This contributes to increased dynamic range allowing images to <u>not<\/u> saturate quickly, allowing more dark and bright areas to be viewed. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GPemg-fQ39s\/WA5lmW0RxBI\/AAAAAAABLp4\/77AiWQrk7fkUNTtwBBKv4bhVL1-rUpF4gCLcB\/s1600\/pixel%2Bwell.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GPemg-fQ39s\/WA5lmW0RxBI\/AAAAAAABLp4\/77AiWQrk7fkUNTtwBBKv4bhVL1-rUpF4gCLcB\/s320\/pixel%2Bwell.JPG\" width=\"320\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">In general, the more electrons in the pixel well along with low noise provides better signal to noise ratios. \u00a0As shown in the graphic, we ideally want a lot of signal electrons vs the noise electrons.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b>Round 2 &#8211; Temporal Dark noise<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Temporal dark noise also known as read noise is measured in electrons, in which a lower temporal dark noise provides better images. \u00a0This noise is produced within the sensor electronics and show up in the pixel well as unwanted noisy electrons. \u00a0The new <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMX250<\/a> has\u00a0incredibly\u00a0low dark noise with only 2.3 electronics compared to the older IMX625 CCD having approximately 9 electrons. \u00a0The<a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> IMX250<\/a> clearly wins this round providing better fidelity!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b>Round 3 &#8211; Sensitivity &amp; Quantum Efficiency<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">Sensitivity\u00a0can be measured looking at the number of photons required\u00a0to have a signal equal to the noise level. \u00a0A lower number of electronics are better indicating higher sensitivity. \u00a0Quantum efficiency\u00a0measures the percentage of photons converted to electronics\u00a0at a given wavelength. \u00a0In comparing the sensitivity thresholds, it takes ~ 4 electrons to gain a signal versus 22 comparing the <a href=\"http:\/\/1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX250_252_Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMX250<\/a> vs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/ICX625.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICX625<\/a> making it much more sensitive. \u00a0Reviewing the quantum efficiency\u00a0at 525nm, further supports this with a higher percentage of photons being converted on the new CMOS sensor with 76% vs 57%. \u00a0Its a knockout in round 3!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><b>.. And the winner is&#8230; the Sony IMX250 CMOS sensor! \u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">This comparison shows excellent gains in technology with this 5MP sensor!
