NOT!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Common lens questions we are often asked are, &#8220;What is a lens&#8217;s optical format (or size; we will use the two interchangeably) and how does it relate to specific image sensor sizes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/industrial-cameras.php\">industrial cameras?<\/a> \u00a0 Along with, &#8220;Can any size machine vision camera be used on any lens format or do they need to be matched exactly?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First lets review the sizes of the machine vision camera image sensors themselves (as seen below).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_475\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-475\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/lens\/machine-vision-lens.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-475 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-sizes.jpg\" alt=\"Lens Optical format\" width=\"518\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-sizes.jpg 518w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-sizes-300x109.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image sensor sizes given in &#8221; vs. true diagonal size in mm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The image sensor size is typically put in terms of \u201cinches\u201d, but really has nothing to do with this and dates back to the \u201cimage tube\u201d days.\u00a0 Without a big history lesson, a sensor that fit into an image tube with a 1\u201d (inch) yoke was deemed a \u00a01\u201d image format .\u00a0 Today, we still use these terms and \u00a0see commons sizes stated as 1\/3\u201d, \u00bd\u201d, 2\/3\u201d as seen in the image above.\u00a0<strong>Note<\/strong>: The image size in &#8221; does\u00a0<strong> NOT<\/strong>\u00a0calculate to mm and vice versa! It is nomenclature only.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>However, what is important is to look at the diagonal across the given image sensor which is the \u201cimage circle\u201d.\u00a0 (i.e The 1\/3\u201d format above has a diagonal of 6 mm. \u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>The size of the lens MUST be equal or greater than the size of the sensor ( circle size that covers the sensor) \u00a0or you simply will not get the whole image!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-478\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-478 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-size-good-and-bad.jpg\" alt=\"Lens optical format vs sensor size\" width=\"601\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-size-good-and-bad.jpg 601w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/lens-image-format-size-good-and-bad-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lens optical format (circle) vs sensor size (rectangle)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The diagram above shows a 1\/3&#8243; format image sensor (6mm diagonal).\u00a0 In order to adequately cover the image sensor, you need a 1\/3&#8243; lens format or larger.\u00a0 On the left, we show a lens with a \u00a01\/4&#8243; format, and it does not cover the sensor.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-480\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-480 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Optical-Vignetting.jpg\" alt=\"Optical Vignetting\" width=\"210\" height=\"158\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Optical Vignetting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The end results from the improper mating of a smaller lens format than the image sensor format will be <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vignetting\">vignetting<\/a>\u00a0(dark corners where the lens does not cover the sensor) of the image.<\/p>\n<p>What can I do when there is no specific lens format matching the image sensor format?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/lens\/machine-vision-lens.html\">Lens manufacturers<\/a> are continuing to design lenses to address the changing sensor market.\u00a0 However you will not always find a specific size format to match the lens.\u00a0 In these cases, you just need to ensure the lens format (image circle diameter) is larger than the sensor as mentioned in the above example.<\/p>\n<p>An example is the newer 1\/1.2\u201d sensor sizes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX174.pdf\">IMX174<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/sensor_specs\/IMX249LQJ_LLJ_Flyer.pdf\">IMX249<\/a> ) which have a diagonal of 13.4mm.\u00a0 Although there are some lens manufacturers that designed a lens with the specific 1\/1.2\u201d format, there are not many.\u00a0 Referring to lens format diagram, the 1\/1.2\u201d format is between a 2\/3\u201d and 1\u201d format.\u00a0 The 2\/3\u201d format has a image circle of 11 mm which will not fully cover the 1\/1.2\u201d format (13.4mm diagonal), and you will get vignetting of the image.\u00a0The solution is to use the next size up which is a 1\u201d format.\u00a0 This format is commonly found in many lens manufacturers, in turn providing many lens manufacturers to choose from.<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/lens\/lens_matrix.htm\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>Click here now for all lens sizes and manufacturers<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h1>\n<p>In conclusion, you can use an image format on a lens on smaller image sensor size, but not the other way!..
