So, by design, it captures <strong>only<\/strong> relevant image changes. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Event_camera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Event-based imaging<\/a> can be a game changer for certain applications. But our overall vision perception also builds upon the eye&#8217;s ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/evidentscientific.com\/en\/microscope-resource\/knowledge-hub\/lightandcolor\/humanvisionintro#:~:text=The%20human%20visual%20system%20response,range)%20of%20over%2010%20decades.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sense brightness changes<\/a> within small segments of the overall scene..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider a baseball batter awaiting a pitched ball.  The overall scene is relatively static: the outfield fence, bases, and foul lines aren&#8217;t moving.  And the infielders are almost static &#8211; relative to the motion of the ball.   But the pitched ball approaching at 80 &#8211; 90 miles per hour can be identified by a good batter, to gauge &#8220;strike or ball&#8221; and &#8220;swing or take&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The batter&#8217;s visual processing does NOT have time to capture the full scene at each instant of &#8220;ball release&#8221;, &#8220;just released&#8221;, &#8220;mid-way&#8221;, and &#8220;arriving soon&#8221;.  Rather, the ball&#8217;s trajectory is discerned as successive changes against a static background.  So too with an event-based camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Event-based imaging - increased speed, less data\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mb9CdZB_rkc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Less data -&gt; More speed:<\/strong> In other circumstances, less data might seem like a handicap. For area scan applications it often would be. Finding defects on a static surface requires ingesting a lot of detail &#8211; all the pixels &#8211; in order to do edge detection, blob analysis, or other algorithmic processing. But by detecting &#8220;just the brightness changes&#8221;, transmitting less data is exactly what delivers the increased speed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications example:  motion detection and analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ids-ueye-evs-results.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Airport security application  &#8211;  Courtesy IDS Imaging<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What is delivered are pixel motion coordinates and timestamps &#8211; NOT pixel brightness values. So you get useable results rather than having to algorithmically compute the results from a traditional area scan image. Track moving objects easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Already intrigued?
