So we&#8217;ll keep this blog as simple as possible, dealing with line rate calculation only.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Teledyne-DALSA-line-scan-cameras.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4433\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Line scan cameras &#8211; Courtesy Teledyne DALSA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Calculate-the-rate\">Calculate the line rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting the line rate right is the application of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldilocks_principle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goldilocks principle<\/a> to line scanning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table alignleft\"><table><tbody><tr><td> <strong>Line rate too slow&#8230;<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Line rate too fast&#8230;<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td> Blurred image if due to too long exposure,   and\/or missed segments due to skipped &#8220;slices&#8221;<\/td><td>Oversampling can create confusion by identifying the same feature as two distinct features<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Why we need to get the line rate rate right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A rotary <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rotary_encoder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encoder<\/a> is typically used to synchronize the motion of the conveyor or web with the line scan camera (and lighting if pulsed).  Naturally the system cannot be operated faster than the maximum line speed, but it may sometimes operator more slowly.  This may happen during ramp up or slow down phases &#8211; when one may still need to obtain imaging &#8211; or by operator choice to conserve energy or avoid stressing mechanical systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Naming the variables &#8230; with example values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resolution A<\/strong> = object space correlation to sensor; FOV \/ pixel array; e.g. if 550mm FOV and 2k sensor = 550\/2000 = 0.275 pixels per mm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Transport speed T<\/strong> = mm per sec; e.g. 4k \/ 1mm yields rate of motion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sampling frequency F<\/strong> = T \/ A; for example values above F = 4000 \/ 0.275 = 14545.4545 = 14.5kHz; spelled out: Frequency = Transport_speed \/ Pixel_spatial_resolution (what 1 pixel equals in target space)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the example figures used above, a line scan camera with 2k resolution and a line scan frequency of about 14.5 kHz will be sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:#8ed1fc\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/knowledgebase2\/1011\/?siq_name=$[FNAME]$$[LNAME]$&amp;siq_email=$[EMAIL]$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Download spreadsheet<\/a><\/mark><\/strong> with labeled fields and examples:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just<a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/knowledgebase2\/1011\/?siq_name=$[FNAME]$$[LNAME]$&amp;siq_email=$[EMAIL]$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>click here<\/strong><\/a>, or on the image below, to download the spreadsheet calculator. Additional values may also be calculated, of course, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Data rate in MB \/ sec:<\/strong>  Useful to confirm camera interface can sustain the data rate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Frame time:<\/strong> The amount of time to process each scanned image.
