More on applications further below.  But first&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does an LWIR camera work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most readers probably come to thermal imaging with some prior knowledge or experience in visible imaging.  Forget all that!  Well not all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For visible imaging using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image_sensor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CMOS sensors<\/a>, photons enter pixel wells and generate a voltage. The array of adjacent pixels are read out as a digital representation of the scene passed through the lens and onto the sensor, according to the optics of the lens and the resolution of the sensor. Thermal camera sensors work differently!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thermal cameras use a sensor that&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microbolometer#:~:text=A%20microbolometer%20is%20a%20specific,thus%20changing%20its%20electrical%20resistance.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microbolometer<\/a>.  The helpful part of the analogy to a CMOS sensor is there we still have an array of pixels, which determines the resolution of the camera, as a 2D digital representation of the scene&#8217;s thermal characteristics.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But unlike a CMOS sensor whose pixels react to photons, a microbolometers upper pixel surface, the detector, is comprised of IR absorbing material, such as Vanadium oxide.  The detector is heated by the IR exposure, and the intensity of exposure in turn changes the electrical resistance.  The change in electrical resistance is measured and passed by an electrode to a silicon substrate and readout integrated circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"434\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/VOx.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/VOx.jpg 434w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/VOx-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Vanadium oxide (VOx) pixel structure &#8211; Courtesy Teledyne DALSA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Just as with visible imaging, for machine vision it&#8217;s the digital representation of the scene that matters, as it&#8217;s algorithms &#8220;consuming&#8221; the image in order to take some action: danger vs. safe; good part vs. bad part; steer left, straight, or right &#8211; or brake; etc.   Whether one generates a pseudo-image for human consumption may well be unnecessary &#8211; or at least secondary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Applications in LWIR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Security e.g. intrusion detection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health screening e.g. sensing who has a fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire detection &#8211; detect heat from early combustion before smoke is detectable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building heat loss &#8211; for energy management and insulation planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equipment monitoring e.g. heat signature may reveal worn bearings or need for lubrication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food safety &#8211; monitor whether required cooking temperatures attained before serving<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You get the idea &#8211; if the thing you care about generates a heat signature distinct from the other things around it, thermal imaging may be just the thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teledyne DALSA Infrared Imaging for Machine Vision\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cOdahYD_qkI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I wanted to buy an LWIR camera?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We could help you with that. For more precision, use a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black-body_radiation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black body radiator<\/a> and manage your own calibration to +\/- 0.5 degrees Celsius!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thresholding with LUT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes one wants to emphasize only regions meeting certain criteria &#8211; in this case heat-based criteria. One may optionally show regions meeting certain temperatures in color, leaving the rest of the image in monochrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dynamic range<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;expressive power&#8221; of a camera is characterized by dynamic range.  Just as the singers Enrico Caruso (opera) and Freddie Mercury (rock) were lauded for their range as well as their precision, in imaging we value dynamic range. The right side was obtained with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/cameras\/family\/Teledyne-DALSA\/Calibir-cameras?siq_name=$[FNAME]$$[LNAME]$&amp;siq_email=$[EMAIL]$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teledyne DALSA Calibir GX<\/a> &#8211; there we see very hot, hot, warm, slightly warm, and cool &#8211; a helpfully nuanced range.
