As the old saying goes, if you have garbage in, you get garbage out.<\/p>\n<p>The lens is the input to the<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Machine_vision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> machine vision system<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp; A low quality lens means that you have already degraded the image coming into the sensor.&nbsp; For instance, let\u2019s say you chose a camera with 5um pixels, which equates to a lens being able to resolve 100 lp\/mm.&nbsp; If your lens\u2019 Modular Transform Function (MTF) is only 50 lp\/mm, you should have chosen a camera with 10um pixel size, because the lens can\u2019t do any better than that.&nbsp;&nbsp; As a note, don\u2019t infer that a camera with 10um pixels is worse than a camera with 5umpixels from this example, as that is not true.&nbsp; So a 50mm focal length lens with a f-number of 2 has a 25mm entrance pupil.&nbsp; The lower the f-number, the more light&nbsp; will be allowed into the system, however this equates to more expensive&nbsp; lens as you need more glass to make a wider entrance pupil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f-stop<\/strong><br \/>\nMany camera lenses have an adjustable iris that opens and closes at the front of the lens to limit the amount of light coming in.&nbsp; <em>f<\/em>\/1,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/1.4,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/2,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/2.8,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/4,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/5.6,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/8,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/11,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/16,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/22,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/32,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/45,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/64,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/90,&nbsp;<em>f<\/em>\/128<\/p>\n<p>The sequence is obtained by approximating the geometric sequence<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/f-stop-sequence.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1224 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/f-stop-sequence.jpg\" alt=\"s-stop sequence\" width=\"766\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/f-stop-sequence.jpg 766w, https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-solutions\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/f-stop-sequence-300x38.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Characteristics of the f-stop<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most lenses are designed to be optimal in the F4-F5.6 range, in which they have the best MTF.<\/li>\n<li>The higher f-number (ie f\/8 ) is, or the more closed the aperture is, better the depth of field if achieved<\/li>\n<li>The lower the f-number (ie f\/1.4) is, or the aperature being wide open is where you get the least depth of field, but not great MTF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a practical application, you need to trade off exposure time, depth of field, and available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stvision.com\/machine-vision-lighting?siq_name=$[FNAME]$ $[LNAME]$&amp;siq_email=$[EMAIL]$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>machine vision&nbsp; lighting.<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp; These three variables are always in tension.&nbsp; If you need fast exposure AND depth of field this means very small amounts of light gets to the sensor.&nbsp;
