Camera Chaos: Which Interface is right for me?

Which camera interface do I use? Probably one of the 1st questions that you need to answer once you decide upon sensor size and optics. Is it a firewire camera (1394), a USB 2.0 camera, a Gigabit Ethernet camera (GigE, or GigeVision) or an analog camera?!

It will determine if you need a framegrabber, what length of cable you can use, if the camera gets powered, and very importantly, what software you will use.

Each of the above interfaces has its time and place. There are pros and cons to each, nor is there really just one correct answer! The interface to use is application dependent. 1stVision has a detailed white paper with specifics on each interface.

Why are you still using Analog?

With all the advances in digital technology, why are you still using analog cameras and framegrabbers. There used to be a significant price differential to go digital; with the recent  introduction of several new product lines, that has gone away.
