As the name suggests, AVT Active FirePackage focuses on ActiveX control based programming, but the package also provides interfaces for DirectShow and TWAIN. The SDK is compatible with Microsoft Windows (Vista, XP, 2000) and includes an IEEE1394 digital camera system driver that is based on the Windows Driver Model (WDM). In addition, the SDK offers high-performance color conversion and image display with very efficient CPU usage.

AVT FirePackage V2.9 provides expanded functions and improvements for its universal C-programming interface (UniAPI). This includes an easy upload of Look-up Tables (LUT), an improved multi-camera operation and several examples that explain how to use UniAPI with third-party software solutions like Open eVision from Euresys or the MATROX Imaging Library. Direct Fire Package is no longer supported by AVT. If you are looking for Direct X capability, it is included in the new Active FirePackage. While the Active FirePackage is an active X SDK, it also includes interfaces for Direct X and Twain.

The recently released Pike firmware (Pike Performance Update) does not run with software packages using the Microsoft 1394 camera drivers.This problem and some other minor bugs have been corrected.
